China's influence on Western universities has become a major political talking point over the past 12 months. Last year a UK parliamentary committee accused the world's second biggest economy of meddling in British academia, while the US has clamped down on Confucius Institutes and expelled Chinese scholars. Current concerns are centred on New Zealand, where a scholar's provocatively titled journal paper on the alleged links between the country's universities and the Chinese military has sparked controversy. The paper was submitted to parliament in July but has been criticised by senior figures at the researcher's own university. Today's main story takes a look at the issues at stake, with more than 200 academics publicly supporting the scholar's academic freedom as an internal review takes place. The row over China's allegedly long reach into academic life across the world continues. (F: THE 03.11.20)
