EU. UNIVERSITIES ‘ON THE FRONT LINE’ AGAINST ABUSES OF ACADEMIC FREEDOM Stampa

European governments have been told to protest "loudly and clearly" against abuses of academic freedom in Hungary or risk other authoritarian states constricting the independence of scholarly institutions. Michael Ignatieff, president of the Central European University, which last week received Austrian accreditation after being driven out of Hungary, has criticised European Union member states for not making the costs of Hungary's actions against CEU and the Academy of Sciences "prohibitive" and lambasted the EU for not making respect for academic freedom a condition of membership. Commenting on the issue, Anne Corbett, a senior associate at LSE Consulting and an expert on higher education and the EU, said that cross-border networks of universities could play a role in lobbying national governments. "I don't think anything will happen unless there is a wide university front saying that this is not just an issue for Hungary, it's really an issue for Europe," she said. (Fonte: THE 18-07-19)
