Within a few weeks of ChatGPT's launch, the enormous disruption it would cause undergraduate teaching was clear, with students able to summon up a passable essay in seconds. But its impact on academic research is less clear. Surely the higher-level thinking required for original scholarship would not be so easily replaced by a language-scraping tool, however powerful? Not yet, perhaps, but, as today's long read explains, researchers are already finding many uses for ChatGPT – whose latest incarnation, ChatGPT-4, was released – including writing references, finessing final drafts or sifting through mountains of open-text comments. Ignoring the algorithm is not an option if researchers want to keep pace with rivals, some believe, and offer some helpful hints on the best way to do this. But it's important to consider the darker side of this technology, too, they add. "Talking to ChatGPT is like talking to a psychopath," says one scholar on the amoral research collaborator with whom researchers might increasingly need to work. F: THE Marzo 2023.
