The news that a scientist in China had edited the genes of embryos, which have now been born, sent shockwaves around the world. Scientists lined up to condemn the actions of He Jiankui – an associate professor at the Southern University of Science and Technology in Shenzhen – as unethical and dangerous, and are now contemplating what happens next. Ellie Bothwell reports that academics have said science needs to regain control over gene editing technology. One researcher warns that it is not for scientists alone to prevent this kind of case, while another fears that the case will "lead to many to call for outright bans" on the development of genome editing.
