Under plans announced on 25 October, the University of Surrey's School of Veterinary Medicine will embrace the "One Health - One Medicine" philosophy, which encourages collaborations between physicians, veterinarians, dentists, nurses and other scientific health-related disciplines. A research-led veterinary medicine degree programme, with an emphasis on veterinary pathology and livestock medicine, is being developed alongside the school, which will become the eighth school of veterinary medicine in the country when it opens in 2014. Lisa Roberts, dean of the Faculty of Health and Medical Science, said: "As a research-intensive university we have the expertise, reputation, technical and business skills which our students can benefit from, allowing us to train the veterinary leaders of the future."
The university has laid the foundations for the new school by expanding its Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences programmes through the launch of a Bachelor of Science (BSc) in veterinary biosciences, and an MSc in veterinary microbiology. A new Master of Science (MSc) in veterinary pathology is also currently under development.
